Prince Charles, the oldest person to ever assume the British throne

became King Charles III on Thursday following the death of his mother,

Queen Elizabeth II. No date has been set for his coronation.

Newly confirmed British Prime Minister Liz Truss revealed Thursday

how Queen Elizabeth II’s successor, Charles, the former prince of Wales, will be known as king –

one of the more scrutinized questions in anticipation of the prior sovereign’s death

and one that has carried great symbolism in past royal transitions.

He also alienated many with his messy divorce from the much-loved Princess Diana,

and by straining the rules that prohibit royals from intervening in public affairs,

wading into debates on issues such as environmental protection and architectural preservation,

Prince Charles paid tribute to his mother Queen Elizabeth II in his first statement as monarch Thursday evening.

“The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family,” the statement read.
